SMG's 2026 BEER MILE

SMG's 2026 BEER MILE

Chug, Run, Repeat: The Southern Mountain Gear July 4th Beer Mile is Back!

Independence Day is usually about three things: fireworks, freedom, and a whole lot of backyard grilling. But if you’ve been around the Southern Mountain Gear (SMG) crew for a while, you know we like our holidays with a side of sweat and a splash of "bad decisions made for a good time."

That’s right—the SMG Beach Beer Mile is officially back for July 4th, 2026!

What is a Beer Mile?

For the uninitiated, the rules are simple but the execution is… well, bubbly. A standard Beer Mile consists of four 400-meter laps. The catch? You must consume one full 12-ounce beer before starting each lap.

 * 1 Beer \ 1 Lap

 * 1 Beer \ 1 Lap

 * 1 Beer \ 1 Lap

 * 1 Beer \ 1 Lap

Total: 4 beers, 1 mile, and 1 very confused stomach. If you "lose your lunch" before the finish line, there’s a mandatory penalty lap waiting for you at the end. It’s a test of aerobic capacity, gastrointestinal fortitude, and your ability to chug under pressure.

Looking Back: A Tradition of Sandy Sprints

If past years are any indication, this July 4th is going to be legendary. Since our 2022 and 2023 races at Jimmy Dee’s Beach Bar, the SMG Beer Mile has become a staple of the Guam outdoor scene. We’ve seen everything from elite trail runners trying to keep their carbonation down to "Solo Racers" who are just here for the vibes (and the Budweiser).

Last year, we saw some incredible times, with top finishers like Carl Matta and Matt Grillo consistently pushing the pace. But remember: this event isn't just for the speed demons. Whether you’re aiming for a sub-10-minute mile or just trying to finish without doing the "penalty dance," the energy is always high, the music is loud, and the Pit Vipers are mandatory (okay, maybe just highly encouraged).

Why Do We Do It?

At Southern Mountain Gear, our mission is to promote hiking, climbing, and exploring the beautiful island we call home. But we also believe that being part of the outdoor community means knowing how to have a laugh together. The Beer Mile is our way of bringing the community together for a challenge that doesn't take itself too seriously.
